NY Senator Rivera Hosts Round Table Discussion with United Breast Cancer Foundation

September 21, 2018

A Collaboration Focused On Helping the Under-Served Breast Cancer Community of the Bronx

United Breast Cancer Foundation (UBCF) met with New York State Senator, Gustavo Rivera and Bronx health care leaders on September 17, at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York. The round table discussion focused on how UBCF could best serve the Bronx community.

Introductions were made by Senator Rivera, St. Barnabas Hospital Health Experts, BronxCare Health System’s Vice President, Montefiore Medical Specialists, Essen Medical’s Breast Surgeon, and Union Community Health Center’s Chief Medical Officer. UBCF’s Program Manager Mrs. Jamie Newberry and Executive Assistant/ Office Manager Mrs. Lauren Brohm took the floor to discuss UBCF’s programs and mission; to make a positive difference in the lives of those affected by Breast Cancer. It was evident that Senator Rivera holds true to his vision of advocating for those that have been under-served, and was passionate about utilizing the United Breast Cancer Foundation as a primary resource. Since Senator Rivera took office in 2011, he has been focused on addressing issues of health inequity, as well as promoting better nutritional and exercise habits through his initiative, Bronx CAN. In January 2013, Senator Rivera was named the ranking member of the New York Senate’s Health Committee.

18 attendees with credentials in the medical industry, community relations, breast surgical oncology, and state government obligation, united from across the district to engage in a dialogue discussing how Breast Cancer affects patients and their families. The topic of discussion was how they would collectively provide assistance to the community, including the inability for those missing work to pay for their mortgage or even necessary Breast Cancer treatment. Topics such as hair loss while receiving treatment and how a simple procedure such as Cold Cap Therapy can prevent this loss while also promoting a positive body image were also addressed. Unfortunately, like most alternative treatments, Cold Cap Therapy is not covered by most insurance companies, however, alternative therapies are considered through UBCF’s Holistic Care Program, where full or partial payment may be provided.

This round table discussion was a proactive network of business-minded individuals that were committed to advocating for the under-served Breast Cancer Community, as well as the general public. There was a preliminary event date set for late 2018, where the United Breast Cancer Foundation would provide water filters the community. Water filter’s selectively remove dangerous contaminants from drinking water while also retaining the healthy mineral deposits that balance the PH of drinking water. In conclusion, this was a successful first collaboration of collective voices that share a common vision of giving back and supporting the community.

Mrs. Newberry shared, “UBCF is looking forward to hosting an event in the Bronx. It’s a fun way to bring together people from the local community while also raising awareness about UBCF and our programs available to women, men and families affected by Breast Cancer”
