My name is Jenny, and I was diagnosed with stage II breast cancer at age 34. After undergoing 8 rounds of chemo, my doctor recommended a mastectomy. On September 23, 2008, I went through 8 1/2 hours of surgery to remove both breasts and begin reconstruction. This was not only a very trying time physically, but it took its toll emotionally as well. I went on to have 33 rounds of radiation, and was declared cancer-free on December 17, 2008. I didn’t feel like my cancer was “over”, however, until I had my reconstruction surgery in July 2009. It was not only wonderful to have all my surgeries completed, but to feel as if my body, though scarred, was as close as it could be to the body I had before my cancer. I am so thankful to the United Breast Cancer Foundation for providing financial support for my family. As a stay-at-home mom to our three children, every little bit helps, and it is such a relief to know that our medical bills will not be as much of a burden now.
