The United Breast Cancer Foundation was named the beneficiary of a reading and book signing event at Barnes & Noble in Bayshore, NY October 29, 2016. Judy San Roman is the author of “They’re Fake and They’re Spectacular”, a touching memoir about her journey with breast cancer and a survivor’s guide to handling the hurdles when faced with this disease. San Roman discussed her book, her decision to have a double mastectomy and her efforts to maintain her beauty after losing her hair. Audience members joined the discussion and spoke about their journeys with breast cancer as well as the taboos that surface with the disease.
As an audience member, I saw how strong and confident Judy was in telling her personal story. She was not swayed by the media scare tactics that sometimes cause an already overwhelming situation to become worse. Women in the breast cancer community are sometimes shamed for maintaining what is deemed as society’s grasp on beauty but for Judy and others, it was a confidence builder. Judy’s empathetic yet candid attitude is refreshing and needed in helping those people who have been affected by breast cancer. Listening and participating in this event gave me a more in depth look at survivors and the struggles they face but also the differences in their journeys. UBCF strives to help those women and men maintain their confidence through the programs we provide.
As we close out October Breast Cancer Awareness Month, UBCF would like to thank all the patients and survivors who have told their stories and helped others persevere through this disease. Thank you to Judy San Roman and Barnes & Noble for donating a portion of the proceeds from the day’s sales to UBCF’s Audrey B. Mastroianni College Scholarship for students who have suffered the loss of a parent or loved one due to breast cancer.
